A Favorite in our Classic and Muscle Car Restoration Shop Florida

One of our favorites to come through the Palm Beach Customs classic and muscle car restoration shop florida – Check out this 1961 Rolls Royce that we were able to work on – giving it a high-end custom paint and TLC.

A Ft Myers client came to us with one of his babies – the other being a Bently – to restore his Silver Cloud Rolls Royce and this particular Rolls only had 5,200 miles on it – but needed some TLC from our team at Palm Beach Customs.

We were more than happy to help out.

Trust Us With Your Auto Paint Needs

Normally the new cars require a primer sealer on the new sheet metal parts then a few coats of base color and 2-3 coats of high grade urethane clear coat to match the OEM finish . When we refinish the classic cars  It can be a very different procedure with body work and multi coats of primer and blocking the primer to straighten the sheet metal .

Once the sheet metal  is ready for paint Then the base coats are applied  usually 4-5 coats  of base and 3 coats of clearThen  the car is sanded with 500 grit wet sand paper  and 600 grit then an additional  3-4 coats of flow clear is applied ( look below )

Collision Repair in SWFL

JohnCollisionOctober 6, 20120 Comment

When you are looking for a  Collision Repair in SWFL and the Fort Myers surrounding areas you need to ask your self some smart questions. Simply taking your car to any shop in the area is not a smart move. Please read on i’m going to go against the grain here and educate a bit on what has happened in the Auto Body Industry. With out rambling on for too long im just going to cut to the facts quickly. I have been in the business as a shop owner since 1980 ( 33 years as of now) and my shop originally was up north. Like most all of us seeking a warmer climate moved to Swfl. I ran what people would call a state of the art shop. We were known as the Heavy hit Collision Repair specialists. We had 6 tow trucks towing for the police at all times and pulled in some pretty mangled up cars and trucks. Along with two Car-o-liner Uni-body Frame machines with measuring we also had a drive on rack for the trucks that came in. In the earlier days the shops had a better handle on the repairs and worked for the customer providing a service (like it should be) and negotiating with the major insurance companies on how your car repair should be done (Amica, Nationwide, Allstate, Geico, Progressive). That was before you heard of Direct Repair Shops.

What happened originally is all the auto body shops that were starving for work signed up as “direct repair “ and thought it was their answser for bad marketing. They liked the idea of work coming in with little effort. They did not realize they would be making concessions in how (your ) car will be repaired. The insurance company wanted to control costs so they fed the auto body shops their customers. Directly this caused all sorts of problems and anti steering laws were created and adjusted because it benefited the insurance company to send the consumer to their “preferred shops” so they can tell the shops how to fix the cars and keep their cost down. This is not a good idea when you are fixing a car to pre-loss condition. For the simple fact the insurance company will push used parts and aftermarket (non OEM) on the shops that they are feeding. I hope you get the picture that that is not the proper way to fix your vehicle after its been in an accident. You deserve new original equipment parts (OEM ) and that is exactly how we repair the cars to pre-loss condition at our shop. We don’t settle for used quarter panels and used parts and many times it is actually cheaper to do the job correct the first time. Period end of discussion and I hope you can see the difference on your Mercedes Benz, BMW or Ford f150. We fix them all and it sure makes a difference in the quality of the repair when the shop is using new OEM parts and not used (LKQ) replacement parts.

The other aspect I will touch on is the shop you pick to repair your car should be a careful decision. I recommend using a shop where the owner is on the job and one person works on your car this way the tech is updated with every aspect .Why? Well, if one person is working on your car taking it apart and writing the estimate along with ordering the parts your best interest (the car will ) have all procedures completed properly. No middle men, no mistakes, just a good quality repair from a trained Icar certified collision tech. When there are to many hands in the project mistakes are made and you do not get the same quality repair.

I hope this helps you with the basics of picking a good repair shop your auto body needs .

It is not a job for us, it is our passion.

1940 Ford Frame off Restoration at Palm Beach Customs

JohnRestorationSeptember 11, 20122 Comments

Another beautiful 1940 Ford Frame off Restoration at Palm Beach Customs what a great car!

During the 1940’s Ford produced about six car designs. This was the standard that was provided in the automobile industry to car manufacturers in that particular year. In fact, the 1940 ford is considered as the iconic classic vehicle for car enthusiasts. The inclusion of V-8 engine and style is stated be the best “hot rod” for the classic car lover. At Palm Beach Customs we provide exclusive car restoration services including classic vehicles like the 1940 Ford. Recently we had the opportunity of providing car restoration and auto paint services to a fellow car lover Teddy hired John Russo a specialist automotive restoration expert for the body metal work and paint refinishing.

Fully Restored 1940 Ford Coupe restoration

Teds 1940 Ford

When a classic car requires restoration with services provided for body and paint, the vehicle must be brought to its bare metal at first. Such a procedure allows you to view any damage or even rust. The car’s exterior surface gets a complete metal striping and sandblasting. We use New Jersey silica along with a final dusting of DuPont star blast the star blast removes any containment’s from the metal therefore we are able to instantly apply a metal etching epoxy primer after the sandblasting procedure is completed. On this 1940 Ford frame off restoration we removed the body and frame for blasting and metal work. The car gets finished with a high quality urethane base coat and high solids clear coat by PPG refinishes. Once the body and paint refinishing is completed then all brand new wiring, chrome and rubbers are installed with fresh glass .

Teddy was a veteran repair shop owner in Hartford Ct. and remarks: “No one restores a car as efficient as John Russo”. He became engaged seeing Russo at work and kept admiring his skills and expertise in the task. He completely loved the restoration of his 1940 classic Ford and congratulated our specialists worked at Palm Beach Customs. The front and rear bumpers to the Ford required re-chroming with a three stage process copper, nickle then chrome. The interior was a Lebanon and Bonny kit carpeting with the re-upholstered seats door panels and headliner. The vehicle’s authenticity is maintained by using the original factory colors as well as the materials designed for the specific model.

The classic Ford from 1940 was not the only auto that was restored at Palm Beach Customs, but there are series of such amazing works that we have done in the past. Our store at Fort Myers, Florida is popular among the local people and also several places far off with the incredible response that we’ve acquired on our services. Teddy kept up to date with how classic cars like the 1940s Ford are restored in the present times. He also indicated how several such owners are looking to bring out these priceless possessions and relinquish the glorious past. Teddy was also very impressed with the other restoration procedures at our shop and our attention to detail and time. Once the car was completed he was excited to take his wife for an ice cream. Like back in the days they were dating.

Today’s Example of Collision Repair and Repaint Services in Florida

One of the most common collision repairs is body work of the front of the car, mainly the hood and sides, as well as bumper repair or replacement.

This Chevrolet Impala suffered a light collision where the hood and front bumper was severely damaged, as well as the body panels around the front wells. The front headlights ,front fenders and the radiator support also suffered damage, including the radiator and A/C condenser, that needed a proper evacuation and recycle, because the Freon is hazardous and must not be vented out into the atmosphere.

First we took the damaged front bumper to get free access to the undercarriage and inner wheelhouses. Then we took some measurements on the frame machine to check the factory measurements, finding that the inner sheet metal needed a little love.

We put a brand new radiator support, new hood, right and left front fenders. We also replaced the side panels. Once we aligned all the sheetmetal we sent it to the downdraft paint booth. It took a couple of rounds to get the base color an even consistency on the hood and side panels. To top it off,  we added a urethane clear coat  to get a nice, shining finish.

After all the paint work was done, we attached the bumper and aimed the headlights, checked the wiring to make sure everything works properly, and the car was ready to roll off the lot. But we usually go the extra mile and gave this Chevy Impala a thorough inside and out cleanup. The client was more than happy with the work we’ve done.

Palm Beach Customs no longer focuses on collision repair, but we like to show you what we've done! Our experience with collision has given us an intimate knowledge of how to ensure that your classic and muscle car is built to look good AND be safe.
